High spatio- temporal resolution land surface temperature mission - a copernicus candidate mission in support of agricultural monitoring
2018
International audience; Evolution in the Copernicus Space Component (CSC) is foreseen in the mid-2020s to meet priority Copernicus user needs not addressed by the existing infrastructure, and/or to reinforce services by monitoring capability in the thematic domains of CO 2 , polar, and agriculture/forestry. This evolution will be synergetic with the enhanced continuity of services for the next generation of CSC. The “High Spatio-Temporal Resolution Land Surface Temperature Monitoring (LSTM) Mission”, identified as one of the CSC Expansion High Priority Candidate Missions (HPCM), currently undergoes an ESA preparatory phase (phase A/B1) study to establish mission feasibility. The LSTM missio…
Thematic vent opening probability maps and hazard assessment of small-scale pyroclastic density currents in the San Salvador volcanic complex (El Sal…
2021
The San Salvador volcanic complex (El Salvador) and Nejapa-Chiltepe volcanic complex (Nicaragua) have been characterized by a significant variability in eruption style and vent location. Densely inhabited cities are built on them and their surroundings, including the metropolitan areas of San Salvador (∼2.4 million people) and Managua (∼1.4 million people), respectively. In this study we present novel vent opening probability maps for these volcanic complexes, which are based on a multi-model approach that relies on kernel density estimators. In particular, we present thematic vent opening maps, i.e., we consider different hazardous phenomena separately, including lava emission, small-scale…
Vicarious Calibration of the Landsat 7 Thermal Infrared Band and LST Algorithm Validation of the ETM+ Instrument Using Three Global Atmospheric Profi…
2017
Due to problems in the thermal infrared sensor on-board the Landsat-8 satellite, Landsat-7 (L7) can be an interesting alternative source of thermal data because it is the only source of well-calibrated, free, high-resolution data. To contribute to the quality of thermal data, a vicarious calibration (VC) of the enhanced thematic mapper instrument and a validation of the single-channel general equation and the water vapor approach algorithm in conjunction with an inversion of the radiative transfer equation (RTE) have been performed during 2013–2015 over two Spanish test sites. For this purpose, three global atmospheric profile data sets were used to better characterize the error due to atmo…
Comparison of input data with different spatial resolution in landscape pattern analysis – A case study from northern Latvia
2017
A suitable spatial scale needs to be selected in geographical and landscape ecological research, and this requires great consideration as different scales have profound effect on derived landscape spatial patterns. Numerous studies have investigated the effects of different scales on landscape metrics using simulated patterns, but few have been conducted to compare different data sources with variable scale for regional- and landscape-scale assessments. Possibly this has occurred because researchers have been prone to use the best available source, a well-known standard, and easiest to use. This study was conducted to assess the impact of input data resolution on values of landscape pattern…
Circummed pine forest database: An electronic archive for mediterranean and submediterranean pine forest vegetation data
2019
Large thematic databases of vegetation plots are increasingly needed for vegetation studies and biodiversity research. In this paper, we present the CircumMed Pine Forest Database (GIVD ID: EU-00-026), which in November 2018, comprised records from 6317 pine-dominated vegetation plots (relevés) and associated vegetation types from 20 countries of the Mediterranean Basin, Near East and Crimea. These vegetation plots were collected through a detailed literature search for plots not previously included in the European Vegetation Archive (EVA), in order to fill geographic gaps in data coverage. The database comprises Mediterranean (including Oromediterranean) pine-forest vegetation plots from b…

Multisensor comparison of NDVI for a semi‐arid environment in Spain
2009
The joint use of multiresolution sensors from different satellites offers many opportunities to describe vegetation and its dynamics. This paper introduces the concept of a virtual constellation (defined as an ensemble of all Earth Observation satellites in orbit that satisfy common requirements) for agricultural applications and contributes to providing the necessary inter-sensor calibration methodology for spectral reflectances and NDVI. For this purpose, we performed an observational study, comparing reflectances and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), from near-synchronous image pairs of Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+), as the reference sensor and Landsat 5…
Emissivity measurements of several soils and vegetation types in the 8–14, μm Wave band: Analysis of two field methods
1997
Abstract The two variants of the box method (with one and two lids) has been rigorously analyzed. As a result of this analysis, a correction factor that takes into account the nonideality of the materials used for the box, as well as its geometry, has been derived A simple method for determining the effective downward atmospheric temperature that uses only the temperature measurement at the zenith also has been proposed. Finally, by using one of the two variants of the box method, 72 in situ emissivity measurements in the 8–14 pin wave-band region of typical vegetation, soils, and rocks of Europe and South America, has been obtained. The use of these data for the ernissivity correction of s…
A generalized single‐channel method for retrieving land surface temperature from remote sensing data
2003
[1] Many papers have developed algorithms to retrieve land surface temperature from at-sensor and land surface emissivity data. These algorithms have been specified for different thermal sensors on board satellites, i.e., the algorithm used for one thermal sensor (or a combination of thermal sensors) cannot be used for other thermal sensor. The main goal of this paper is to propose a generalized single-channel algorithm that only uses the total atmospheric water vapour content and the channel effective wavelength (assuming that emissivity is known), and can be applied to thermal sensors characterized with a FWHM (Full-Width Half-Maximum) of around 1 μm actually operative on board satellites…
Validation of Landsat-7/ETM+ Thermal-Band Calibration and Atmospheric Correction With Ground-Based Measurements
2010
Ground-based measurements of land-surface temperature (LST) performed in a homogeneous site of rice crops close to Valencia, Spain, were used for the validation of the calibration and the atmospheric correction of the Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) thermal band. Atmospheric radiosondes were launched at the test site around the satellite overpasses. Field-emissivity measurements of the near-full-vegetated rice crops were also performed. Seven concurrences of Landsat-7 and ground data were obtained in July and August 2004-2007. The ground measurements were used with the MODTRAN-4 radiative transfer model to simulate at-sensor radiances and brightness temperatures, which were c…
